Down Days at Walt Disney World

Home > Travel Tips > Down Days at Walt Disney World

November 1, 2017 by Becca Swerock

Everyone needs a break from the parks. Sometimes, the heat wears us down too fast, the crowds are too heavy and we need a break, or we just don’t have enough park tickets, so we plan a “down” day.  There are so many non-park things to do on Disney property, you never even have to leave. Today, we are going to talk about our top 4 things to do on property when you aren’t going to a park!

1) The obvious first choice is a simple resort pool day.

All Disney resorts have on site pools. Some resorts have 3 or more pools! If the weather is nice, you can spend the day getting refreshed poolside. The main pools at Disney resorts usually have a bar nearby and are usually located pretty close to the main dining hall for the resort. My family almost always stays at Pop Century Resort. The “decades” theming is always fun and we always seem to find something new. The main pool at Pop Century is the “Hippy Dippy Pool” and the Pop Century website offers this description:“Go with the flow at the Hippy Dippy Pool, home to far-out flower-shaped water jets and a lazy 1960’s attitude. Featuring over 235,613 gallons, this pool is big on fun.For the little ones, a kiddie pool is located behind Classic Hall, just behind the Hippy Dippy Pool.Movies Under the Stars
For even more enjoyment, Disney movies are screened on select nights at the Hippy Dippy Pool.”

2) My second favorite thing to do is to resort hop!

One of the perks of staying on site is using Disney’s transportation to get from one place to another. This includes other resorts!  Have you ever wondered what the inside of the Grand Floridian looks like? Go for a visit!  Every single resort on Disney property is themed differently. Each unique resort offers something new. From the views to the food offerings, it is worth spending a day checking them out! Below are some random shots of some of the resorts we’ve visited over the years!

  • side view of yo-yo sculpture
  • Lady from Lady and the Tramp sculpture
  • Sculpture of Crush the Sea Turtle from Finding Nemo
  • giant sculpture of foosball player figure

  • view of colorfully painted building by the water
  • mom and child playing table tennis outside

3) My third favorite thing to do is Disney Springs!

I can spend almost an entire day at Disney Springs. From the dining to the shopping to the performers, there are so many things to see and do! Disney Springs is just a short ride from your resort and is open to the public. No ticket is needed for entry. Disney Springs offers some amazing dining locations like T-Rex Cafe, Rainforest Cafe, and Splitsville. There are also a ton of unique shops to explore. While you’re there, be sure to check out the Lego Store. We can spend hours lost in there!  Below are some candid shots around Disney Springs!

4) My fourth favorite thing to do on a non park day is just to relax!

Take the day and relax those feet! When you’ve had enough relaxing, Disney resorts offer laundry rooms for your convenience. Your down day is a great day to get caught up on laundry. Just remember, you will want to stay near the laundry room, and it is a pay for service laundry room. Since I am a driver, I always bring my own detergents and dryer sheets! I save those little sample packs that I get over the year and use those when needed!

So, there are my top 4 things to do on a non-park day! What is your favorite thing to do on a non park day?
