Florida has reached record heat this week, and it’s just the beginning of summer. Which means it’s a perfect time to visit a Typhoon in Florida, Typhoon Lagoon. One of two of Disney’s water parks on site (at the time of this writing, Blizzard Beach is still closed) and great way to spend the day relaxing and cooling off.

Typhoon Lagoon
This was Disney’s second water park to open on property, after Disney’s River Country, which closed in November 2001. Touted as home to the “World’s Largest Wave Pool” it opened on June 1, 1989. And you can even body surf in it.
Backstory of the park is the “Disney legend” of a typhoon that wreaked havoc upon a formerly perfect tropical paradise. The storm flung ships, fishing gear and surfboards throughout the island. Everything has been left where it landed, even Miss Tilly. She’s a shrimp boat that was impaled on “Mount Mayday”. A mountain that erupts a 50-foot geyser of water every half hour. Watch out for “Lagoona Gator”, she’s the mascot and can be spotted throughout the park.
It did close, along with the other Walt Disney World parks in March of 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Although when the theme parks reopened on July 11 – 15, 2020, the water parks remained closed. Then after being closed for almost two years, it reopened again on January 2, 2022.
